Boxwoods are one of the most popular evergreen shrubs for landscapes—and for good reason. Few plants offer the same combination of structure, year-round color, and versatility.
A well-trimmed boxwood hedge brings a clean, formal look to any property. In addition to their classic appearance, boxwoods are evergreen in winter, deer-resistant, and low-maintenance, making them a reliable choice for Virginia landscapes.
Growing Boxwoods in Richmond, VA
Boxwoods perform best in our region when planted correctly and given consistent care:
- Prefer morning sun with afternoon shade, especially in summer heat
- Benefit from well-drained soil enriched with compost
- Need consistent moisture while establishing
- Should be mulched to protect shallow roots from heat and cold
Boxwood Watering, Pruning, & Fertilizing Guide
Proper watering is critical, especially in the first 1–2 years after planting.
- New plantings: Water deeply 2–3 times per week
- Established plants: Water during extended dry periods
- Always water at the base (avoid wet foliage when possible)
- Do not allow soil to fully dry out during summer heat
In Richmond’s hot summers, consistent deep watering is more important than frequent shallow watering.
Pruning
Pruning depends on the variety and desired shape.
- Best time to prune: late spring through early summer
- Light shaping can be done again in mid-summer if needed
- Avoid heavy pruning in late fall or winter
Boxwoods respond well to trimming and can be shaped into hedges, borders, or formal designs.
Best Fertilizer:
We recommend using Espoma Tone products, which are organic and slow-release.
- Holly-tone → Best overall choice for boxwoods
- Promotes deep green foliage and strong root development
- Safe for established and newly planted shrubs
When to Fertilize:
- Apply in early spring (March–April in Virginia)
- Do not fertilize after July (prevents winter damage)
How to Apply:
- Sprinkle evenly around the drip line (not against the trunk)
- Lightly rake into soil surface if possible
- Water thoroughly after application
