Why We Love Nellie Stevens Holly 🌿 (Ilex x ‘Nellie R. Stevens’)

We have two beautiful hollies lining our office spaces here at Cross Creek. One stands near the main office floral customer service entrance, while the other welcomes our designers at our landscape office.

Our main office's holly was planted in 2005 from a small cutting by our founder, Gene. 20 years later, it’s now reaching close to 20 feet tall and has become a staple piece of the property.

Our landscape office holly was planted more recently in 2022 and is already thriving beautifully.

One of the reasons we love Nellie Stevens Holly so much is because of how versatile it is in the landscape. These evergreen hollies shape exceptionally well along homes, property lines, and foundation beds while still keeping a soft, elegant appearance. They’re also incredibly functional. Nellie Stevens Holly makes an excellent privacy screen, adds year-round curb appeal, and can even help visually extend the width of a home.

Another reason they stand out is their durability. They’re highly adaptable, heat-resistant, drought-tolerant once established, and generally deer-resistant, making them a reliable choice for Virginia landscapes.

And of course, the bright red berries are always a favorite. They fruit heavily without needing a nearby male pollinator, bringing beautiful winter color to the landscape when many other plants have gone dormant.

Hardy, timeless, and dependable. That’s why we love Nellie Stevens Holly here at Cross Creek. ❤️

A few quick plant care reminders:
💧 Check soil moisture daily, especially for pots and baskets
💧 Water early in the morning for best absorption
💧 Adjust your irrigation timers based on the weather, not just the calendar
💧 New plantings will need more frequent watering as roots establish
