Sun Perennials for the Richmond Area:
Sun perennials are a great choice for back yards & side yards that have at least a few hours of direct sun per day. Since their summer blooms come at specific times and their growth habit ranges from low ground cover types that only grow a few inches tall to many varieties that can top 5', design assistance from a Nursery or Landscape professional is often helpful. Many perennials will "colonize" (spread), crowding out less aggressive varieties after a couple of growing seasons. Also consider that a chosen color pallet of "purple and yellow" may not bloom at the same time. Most sun perennials tolerate & actually thrive in our Central Virginia clay soils, and while perennials don't have the "all summer color" that annuals provide, when they are in bloom it is worth the wait. At Cross Creek Nursery we carry hundreds of perennial cultivars, and our associates will gladly point out some of our favorites and help with the confusion most of us have on how to lay out a successful perennial garden.
