Crape Myrtles Carried by Cross Creek Nursery & Garden Center in Richmond VA: Crape Myrtles are Richmond's longest blooming tree, with some varieties coming in to flower in late June and lasting almost to October. Pruning off old blooms will encourage even more flowers. You need a full sun location for maximum color. All colors have short, medium & tall varieties, and after they go dormant the exfoliating bark of several varieties have winter interest. Multi-trunk varieties are the norm (typically 3-4 trunks), but taller varieties are also grown as a "standard" (single straight trunk) making nice street trees. Once established, crepes are very forgiving with water variations, adapting to both dry summers and rainy periods. In late winter they can be pruned or left natural---either way they will exhibit beautiful color when the hot days of summer arrive!
