Proper Fertilizing Techniques:
March is the ideal time of the year to fertilize your shrubs and trees in your garden.
Early spring feeding will help get them off to a good growing start early in the season
Proper Fertilizer to Use:
Evergreen trees and shrubs, including rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, juniper, cypress and broad-leaf evergreens should be fertilized using a sulfer based fertilizer such as Hollytone.
Deciduous trees and shrubs which includes fruit, flowering and shade trees, roses, Viburnums, forsythia, etc. can be fed with a general garden fertilizer such as Plantone or Osmocote.
Perennials, annuals and vegetables are also fertilized with a general garden fertilizer such as Osmocote.
Applying Fertilizer:
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL before you apply any type of fertilizer. Application times, amounts and conditions should be followed in order to give plants the proper amount of fertilizer. Over applying the fertilizer can harm the plants or the environment.
Make Sure to water in the fertilzer at the time of application to limit any burning of surface or exposed roots.
Apply the fertilizer on the outer edge of the canopy of the shrubs and perennials to limit any burning of the tender surface roots or crown of the plant. Be sure to not hit the leaves of the plants as this may burn the plants as well.
Be sure to read the package to determine the proper amount to watering.
Annuals may be fertilized on a more frequent basis but don't overapply as this may could cause salt buildup which could harm the plant.
